Diwali Wishes and Card Messages for Family, Friends and Colleagues

Diwali, the festival of lights, falls on Sunday, November 8 this year, with the five days of celebration running from Dhanteras on Friday, November 6 to Bhai Dooj on Tuesday, November 10 (Almanac). Celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and many Buddhists, it marks the victory of light over darkness (Britannica). Families light diyas, share sweets, clean and decorate their homes, and visit or call the people they love.

A Diwali message usually carries one of three ideas: light, prosperity or togetherness. You don't need all three in one line. Pick the one that fits the person, and add a detail that's yours.

For family

Family wishes can be the warmest and the most personal. Mention the rituals you share, the food you miss, or the person who always does the rangoli.

Light and blessings
  • Wishing you a Diwali full of light, laughter and far too many sweets.
  • May the diyas light up your home and the year ahead. Happy Diwali, with love.
  • May Lakshmi bless your home with health, happiness and prosperity.
When you're apart

  • Missing our Diwali mornings together. Sending light and hugs until we're home.
  • Happy Diwali to the family that makes every festival feel like home, even from far away.
  • I'll light a diya here at the same time you do there. Happy Diwali.

For friends

Friends can be playful. Food is always a safe joke.

  • Happy Diwali. Save me some barfi, I'm on my way.
  • Wishing you a sparkling Diwali and a bright, lucky year ahead.
  • May your Diwali be as bright as your smile and as sweet as your mother's ladoos.
  • Here's to new beginnings, good food and good friends. Happy Diwali.

For colleagues and clients

At work, keep it inclusive and warm. "Happy Diwali" is always appropriate; save religious references for people you know well.

For one colleague

  • Wishing you and your family a happy and prosperous Diwali.
  • May this festival of lights bring you joy, good health and success in the year ahead.

For clients and partners

  • Thank you for a wonderful year of working together. Happy Diwali from all of us.
  • Warm wishes for Diwali and the new year from our team to yours.
  • May the year ahead be bright for you and your business. Happy Diwali.

For siblings on the last day

Bhai Dooj, the final day, celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters. It's a lovely moment for a short, personal note.

  • Happy Bhai Dooj to the brother who still steals my sweets and still has my back.
  • To my sister, my first friend: thank you for everything. Happy Bhai Dooj.
  • Miles apart, still your favorite sibling. Happy Bhai Dooj.

For someone celebrating Diwali for the first time

If you're writing to a friend's family, a new partner's parents or a colleague whose traditions you're still learning, keep it simple and sincere.

  • Wishing you and your family a joyful Diwali. Thank you for sharing the celebration with me.
  • Happy Diwali. May your home be full of light and your year be full of good news.

Timing your message

Many people send wishes on Dhanteras or on the main day of Lakshmi Puja. If your family is spread across time zones, an early-morning message on the day itself is the one that gets read first, before the visits, the phone calls and the sweets begin. A message that arrives the week after can feel like an afterthought, so plan ahead.

Send it so it lands on the day

A card that arrives late still says something, just not what you meant. With a GreetSpark letter you can write it tonight and schedule it for 6 a.m. their time on the day itself, wherever they live. It tears open on their phone like an envelope, unfolds in the handwriting you choose, can carry your voice, and you'll know the moment it's opened. Three letters a month are free.
